Ya nope.

Not in PDX. Not in 2016. Not OK.

Thoughts?

I completely agree that kids are way too sheltered today. And I couldn't believe those stats about kids not playing outdoors! Wow.

But I think it very much would depend on where you live. (And also the age and maturity level of the child.) I just got notice last night of another armed robbery 1-2 blocks over. No way would I let my child run around here alone, and on buses/trains. No way.

Now, if I had say, a 12 year old and it was a group of them going to some event together, probably. But a 9 year old running about on buses/trains alone, sorry. Not here.

Totally
Sheltered really depends on how you look at it.

Kid rearing and parenting has changed a lot in the last 40+ years. Some for the good and some for the bad.

I'll agree that some kids are being raised without the skills they need to survive outside the nest. As in life skills like cooking and cleaning. As well as critical thinking and problem solving.

But I don't think free range is the answer. For a lot of reasons.
