Things to Do This Weekend 5/26 - 5/27 Edition  

Hard to believe that Memorial Day weekend is nearly upon us. In a few short weeks Summer Solstice will be here as well. Where has the time gone?

This weekend’s selections include both indoor and outdoor options with an eye towards frugal kid friendly fun. So go out and enjoy PDX. Too far away? Check your local stores, farmer’s markets, libraries, community centers and parks departments for more accessible activities.

Beaverton Farmers Market - Saturday adjacent to Beaverton City Park and the Beaverton Public Library from 8am to 1pm. Featuring Richie & the Cadillacs.

Hillsboro Farmers Market - Saturday located on Main Street between 1st and 3rd Avenue, one block northwest of the Third Avenue MAX station and is open from 8am to 1:30pm. Featuring John Twist. Ongoing events Kids’ Market Sprouts Club, the Amazing Market Race, Bookworm Corner at Jacobsen’s Books.

Pirate Celebration Saturday 9:30am to 3:30pm at the Portland Children’s Museum. “Ahoy little mateys! It's time to dust off your eye patch, bring your parrot, and join us for our annual Pirate Celebration! Create your own treasure chest, meet a mermaid, or take in a puppet show. Free with Museum admission. Additional craft fees may apply.”

International Storytime – Saturday at the Hillsboro Main Library from 10am to 11:30am. Volunteers share stories in Bulgarian along with fun activities. International Storytimes are a fun way to be exposed to a new language or enjoy a language that you already know! 

Grandma and Grandpa!  Saturday 10am at the Tanasbourne Store. “Please join Miss Gioia for stories, crafts and a light snack!” Free.

Powell’s Kids' Storytime Join us every Saturday in May at 11am. All ages. Free.

Bring out the Grill! at the Tanasbourne Whole Foods - Saturday noon to 6pm. “Kick off Memorial Day weekend with great grillin’ ideas!  Join us to sample some of our favorite meats and veggies for the grill. We’ll have customized kebabs for sale (priced by weight) & have gluten-free and vegan options on hand as well!” Free.

Public Tour - European Art Saturday, 3pm to 4pm “Explore the Museum with a docent skilled in bringing art to life.” Tours are free for members or with Museum admission, and free for children age 17 and younger.

Hillsboro Farmers Market - Sunday located at the parking area between Orenco Station Parkway and NE 61st Avenue, just off Cornell Road and within walking distance of the Orenco MAX stop and open from 10am to 2pm.

Family & Public Tour every Sunday in May 12:30pm to 1:30pm and 3pm to 4pm.Bring your family to explore the Museum with a docent skilled at engaging visitors of all ages.” Tours are free for members or with Museum admission, and free for children age 17 and younger.

47th Annual Shell Show at OMSI May 22nd through June 2nd, 9:30am to 5:30pm “View rare and beautiful shells from around the world at the 47th Annual Shell Show, presented by the Oregon Society of Conchologists (OSC).” Free with admission.

Peony Display at Lan Su Chinese Garden May 26th through 30th, 10am to 6pm. “Take a peony walk with the garden’s horticulture manager, tour the collection on your own with a peony guide, or follow the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine as they present a tour focusing on medicinal uses of peonies.” Free with admission
